In 2015 Hazel Heal was near death. In 2019 she was an exhibitor at the renowned American Association for Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) conference in Boston where she me Dr Raymond Schinazi – the scientist who developed the medicine that cured her.
Hepatitis C is a highly stigmatised disease and has been lacking a symbol behind which to rally. Thanks to the efforts of Native American artist Marty2Bull it now has the butterfly symbol that is being widely adopted around the world from New Zealand to Uzbekistan.
In 2016 Dr James Freeman presented the initial clinical results of the first Hepatitis C generics to the world as a late breaker at the EASL ILC. The final results, presented at EASL 2017, clearly demonstrated that, just like the HIV generics that preceded them, Hepatitis C generics work.
